Purple Crayon Class Descriptions
Open Studio (Any age) Takes place year round, even in Summer.
Drop in any Wednesday from 10-12 for $10 per child. Children can work at their own pace on coloring, painting,
cutting, beading, play dough and more. No instructor.
New 2's Studio (20mo - 2.5yrs) Takes place year round, even in Summer.
Even the youngest child benefits from and enjoys creating art. We promote sharing and communication while working on process-
oriented projects where children will color, paint, glue and bead to create new projects each week. Watch your child’s artistic spirit (and
fine motor skills) blossom as they create spring flower wall hangings, bright kites to fly in the wind, stand-up zoo animals, feely books,
and so much more. Grown-ups work beside their child.
Exploring Materials (2 - 4yrs) Takes place year round, even in Summer.
Colorful process-oriented projects help children develop an appreciation for creating art while developing fine motor shills. Children will
experiment with bingo bottles, oil pastels, tempera cakes, foam paint, paint rollers, assorted brushes, beads, scissors, colorful papers,
fabric scraps, and several different types of glue. Children will learn to follow instructions, experiment with materials, focus on a single
project each week, and practice sharing and making friends. Grown-ups work beside their children as needed!
Creation Station (3 - 5yrs) Will not take place during Camp Crayon weeks June 16 - August 22.
This class is great for kids ready to “graduate” from Exploring Materials. New themes will be explored in each class. We take our art a
little further as we work with wood, wire, fabric, painting and drawing to create paintings, collages, mobiles, masks, dioramas, and
sculptures big and small. Getting ready for kindergarten should be fun, and we want to help make it so. Children love this opportunity to
create cool projects while building on skills needed for kindergarten: Following instructions, working with others, cutting, beading,
coloring, writing letters, and reinforcing knowledge of shapes, letters, numbers, and colors. This is a drop-off class for children who are
ready to work independently.
Crayon Gallery (Group A: 6 - 9yrs) Will not take place during Camp Crayon weeks June 16 - August 22.
Artists will focus on imagination-based painting, drawing and sculpture. For inspiration, they will explore the works of artistic masters
past and present. Children will learn about artist and techniques through time and practice their fine motor skills while creating fun Eric
Carle-like collage animals, Dr. Seuss villages, crazy puppets wooden sculptures and much more. The session will culminate in a
gallery show.
(Group B: 10+ yrs) Will not take place during Camp Crayon weeks June 16 - August 22.
Our older group will develop their own individual imaginative style. Lessons include working from graphics, still life and 3-D objects
while drawing and painting animals, flowers, and the human form. In addition, works of various artists will be introduced every week. We
always use fine artist's materials.
If it's a portfolio you need, this is the place. Students who are ready, will develop their drawing and painting skills while learning a variety
of techniques. Students will explore interesting subjects and develop an understanding of composition, form, light, shadow, and the
human figure. Emphasis is on shading, perspective, composition and developing finished pieces. This session includes working with
a live (clothed) model. Classes are designed to be an ongoing experience where basic skills are perfected throughout the session.
This class is great for students interested in building a portfolio.
